Real freshwater pearls and imitation pearls can look surprisingly similar in photos. No single home test is conclusive, especially for a valuable or sentimental piece, but several observations together can help you make a more informed assessment.
1. Look for natural variation
Freshwater pearls are formed by living mussels, so small differences in shape, surface, size and colour are normal. Examine the pearls side by side under good light. Perfectly identical beads are more likely to be manufactured, although high-quality real pearls can still be carefully matched.
2. Examine the lustre
Nacre gives a real pearl a layered, dimensional glow. As you turn it, look for subtle changes in tone and a sense of depth beneath the surface. Many imitation pearls have a flatter, more uniform shine. This is an indicator, not proof, because premium glass imitations can be convincing.
3. Check temperature and weight
Real pearls often feel cool when first touched and warm gradually against the skin. Glass imitations can behave similarly, while plastic is usually lighter and reaches skin temperature quickly. Compare several beads rather than relying on one moment.
4. Inspect the drill holes
Use a magnifying glass if available. Real nacre should continue cleanly to the edge of the hole. Imitation coatings may look chipped, flaked or gathered around the opening, revealing glass or plastic underneath. Avoid inserting sharp objects, which can damage the pearl or thread.
5. Use the tooth test cautiously
Gently touching a pearl to the edge of a clean front tooth may produce a slightly fine or gritty sensation from natural nacre; many imitation surfaces feel smooth. Do not scrape, bite or use this test on a valuable, antique or delicate piece. It is not definitive and should be treated as one clue only.
When to get a professional opinion
For valuable jewellery, certification, X-ray imaging or examination by a qualified gemmologist is more reliable than any home test. When buying online, look for a seller that names the pearl type and clearly discloses the setting materials.
